Smaller retail businesses, who are setting up for the first time or changing their till systems, often struggle to choose the correct type of till system for their business. I have known shopkeepers and restaurant owners to choose cheap till systems only for them to be let down on after-sales support or on reliability. This can severely impact their business and increase stress levels for the business owner.
Modern well-known EPOS systems, like Square, iZettle or SumUp, give you all the hardware and software you need to get going, but they charge a percentage for each transaction. Some smaller businesses prefer a much older POS / till system, as there is no transaction fee. However, as with many things, there are pros and cons to each approach.
Some older till systems don’t charge a transaction fee, but the disadvantage is they can’t easily automate stock checking and they can’t automate part of the accounting process. In the long run, a well-worked EPOS system can save you time and money in the long run, even though it appears the upfront cost is higher.
